28th January
We are off, having left all sort of food in various cupboards as well as one of the most important items, the weather station. This has the corresponding outdoor transponder which we carried in the saddle bag of JC's bike in Wishstream 1. So, as soon as we get south and some good weather, 2 x thermometers are on the shopping list.
Actually, it is probably a good thing that we didn't know the temperature last night.
The campsite at Montreuil is on 9 level just below the Citadel wall. It is very basic and there is noone in the office. so we helped ourselves to aplot half way up on level 4 and tried on the new windscreen cover and plugged in the new 800 watt oil heater.
After a walk around up to the citadel and from there around the village, we concluded that Montreuil is closed in January. A slap up french meal is out of the question so back to Wishstream 2 for a G&T before opening a can of Cassoulet. Luckily I was having a 'no taste' evening so didn't mind.
The van was cold. But we turned on the diesel heater for a couple of hours and turned in early. Gybo and Kicker were in their beds quite close to the oil heater so I thought they would be ok and we were snuggly under our duvets. About 2.00 i woke up and could hardly breath. It was odd. Freezing but musty. So opened the electric roof hatch a mm, and tried to get back to sleep.
Kicker was sick at about 4.00. On the floor between JC and I and a splatter away from my shoes. So, on go the lights, cupboards opened and various cleaning materials sought. The only thing that could be heard was JC's gentle snoring throughout the cleaning programme. Amazing.
In the morning, Gybo was definately cold and after her morning walk would not get back in the van. She didn't like it! Only breakfast coaxed her in.
